A brief explanation of our
casting process.
Handcarved Wax Models
Ready for Casting
After being carved in wax, the model is ready for the investment process, in which a flask is placed around the model and a plaster type substance called 'investment' is poured to fill the flask. A 'burnout' oven or kiln is then used to burnout the wax, leaving a hollow void in the investment in the exact form of the original wax model. Burning out the wax results in the original wax model being "lost", hence the term "Lost Wax Casting." After burnout, but while the flask is still of temperature, it is placed in a centrifugal casting machine and the metal of choice is melted and centrifugally forced into the hollow cavity left in the investment by the burned out wax model. Removal of the investment from around the cast model reveals what once was a handcarved wax model now in metal. After a bit of touch up metal work, the piece is polished to a high luster and depending on the metal of choice, may be lacquered or coated for tarnish resistance.
